Scientists set record resolution for drawing at the one-nanometer length scale

Upton, NY (SPX) May 02, 2017
The ability to pattern materials at ever-smaller sizes - using electron-beam lithography (EBL), in which an electron-sensitive material is exposed to a focused beam of electrons, as a primary method - is driving advances in nanotechnology. When the feature size of materials is reduced from the macroscale to the nanoscale, individual atoms and molecules can be manipulated to dramatically alter material properties, such as color, chemical reactivity, electrical conductivity, and light interactions. ... read more

Why space dust emits radio waves upon crashing into a spacecraft
Washington DC (SPX) May 03, 2017
When spacecraft and satellites travel through space they encounter tiny, fast moving particles of space dust and debris. If the particle travels fast enough, its impact appears to create electromagnetic radiation (in the form of radio waves) that can damage or even disable the craft's electronic systems.
